Colour and nutrition in one additive
Beta-carotene is the only common colourant that is also a provitamin A source, so one ingredient serves both functions. That is why it dominates in dairy and beverages where a vitamin claim is wanted.
Formulation decides stability
The pure crystal is unstable to light and oxygen. Commercial grades are emulsions or beadlets that protect it, and the choice between water-dispersible and oil-soluble determines which products it can go into.
Typical Applications
- Beverages and dairy — 10-50 ppm in water-dispersible form for an orange-yellow shade.
- Butter and margarine — 20-50 ppm oil-soluble to standardise colour.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my product fade?
Light and oxygen exposure. Use an encapsulated grade and consider opaque packaging.
Can it replace synthetic colours?
Yes for yellow-orange shades, and it supports a natural colour claim.
Does it taste of carrot?
At normal dosage no; high doses in beverages can carry a vegetable note.
